CANBERRA, ACT, Dec. 22 -- Australian Federal Police issued the following media release:

A Sydney man has appeared in Manly Local Court today (22 December, 2025) charged with allegedly using social media to threaten a federal parliamentarian.

The Beacon Hill man, 27, was charged yesterday (21 December, 2025) after an AFP National Security Investigations (NSI) team investigation into an alleged online threat.

The AFP allegedly linked the threat to the man and executed a search warrant at a Beacon Hill home yesterday evening. A number of electronic devices were seized for forensic examination.

It will be alleged the man made an online post calling for the kidnapping of the federal parliamentarian.

The man was charged with:

* One count of using a carriage service to threaten serious harm, contrary to section 474.15(2) of theCriminal Code(Cth); and* One count of contravening a section 3LA order, contrary to section 3LA(6) of theCrimes Act 1914(Cth).

These offences carry maximum penalties of seven and 10 years imprisonment, respectively.

The man was granted strict conditional bail and will return to court on 3 March, 2025.

The AFP established NSI teams in September, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion, including the targeting of federal parliamentarians.
