CANBERRA, ACT, Aug. 13 -- The Prime Minister of Australia issued the following media release:
Well, it is fantastic to be back here at Tomago.
I stood here on not quite this sunny a day, it must be said, for those of you who remember that amazing thunderclap that occurred, and it rained torrentially that day.
But it was also a bright day.
It was a bright day because we promised that our government had your back.
And what we are doing today is announcing what governments do the best - a Federal Labor Government working with the New South Wales Labor Government to deliver in the national interest, in the interests of the Hunter, and in the interests of your jobs and your future.
This announcement today secures the future of this facility.
An example, as well, of governments working with the private sector to make sure that we're not at the end of supply chains, making sure that there is a future made right here in Australia, and a future made right here in the Hunter.
And I want to pay tribute to each and every one of the workers here, because what you do is strengthen our country, strengthen our resilience.
Aluminium is an essential product and will be even more important into the future, which is why it's absolutely critical that today's agreement makes sure that this facility that has been so important for the Hunter, 1,000 direct jobs, but 5,000 indirect jobs in this region on top of that, but tens of thousands of jobs, if not hundreds of thousands of jobs, right throughout the country because of what you produce.
But most importantly, you make our nation stronger.
So, thank you for what you do.
Thank you to the company as well for the constructive engagement that we've had to make sure that this facility not only survives but thrives into the future.
Well done.
