The Crisafulli Government is delivering lifesaving electrical safety lessons with its Safety Heroes program being rolled out across the State's primary schools.
This year's program, launched today with Ergon at Toowoomba East Primary School, has received record interest and is just one of the ways the Crisafulli Government is preparing Queenslanders for the upcoming storm season.
The Crisafulli Government is delivering better services through a stronger economy and giving Queensland kids the tools they need to stay safe, with the Safety Heroes program designed to assist teachers in delivering important safety messages around electricity and electrical equipment.
The program ensures teachers have interactive resources that are aligned to support curriculum requirements.
Treasurer, Minister for Energy and Member for Toowoomba South David Janetzki said the program reinforced the value of teaching students from Prep to Year 6 how electricity works and how to stay safe around it.
"This year a record 99 per cent of Queensland primary schools have registered for Safety Heroes and I'm delighted to launch this year's program in Toowoomba," Treasurer Janetzki said.
"Each year our State faces the impact of severe weather, bushfires and floods and it's important from a young age Queenslanders know exactly what to do when faced with electrical hazards at home and in the community."
Member for Toowoomba North Trevor Watts said teaching young people about electrical safety has never been more important.
"This program provides interactive teaching resources that are aligned to support the curriculum requirements of Queensland schools," Mr Watts said.
"Our Safety Heroes have a thirst for knowledge and even teachers can learn a thing or two during our electrical safety presentations, where the team shares real life examples based on personal and professional experiences."
Ergon Area Manager Jason Rowe said the program had become an important tool for teachers across the State.
"As part of Safety Heroes children are taught to stay at least 10 metres away from deadly hazards and tell an adult to report them to emergency services on 000," Mr Rowe said.
"The children learn water is a good conductor of electricity, so they should never use wet electrical appliances or power points that have been submerged.
"Floodwaters can conceal many hazards, including fallen powerlines, so we remind children never to enter swollen creeks or rivers."
The Crisafulli Government's Safety Heroes program will be held during Electrical Safety Fortnight 31 August - 11 September 2026.
